Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a component of Traditional Chinese Medicine which has been incorporated into western medical practices in physiotherapy to treat a variety of conditions, both local and systemic and we often use it in conjunction with Physiotherapy for maximum relief and recovery.

Acupuncture treatment accesses the bodies “meridial” or energy system using specific acupuncture points. Treatment is gentle and needles are retained for 20-30 minutes, sometimes heat or electrical stimulation are added for enhanced effect. It can be very helpful in the treatment of chronic pain conditions and arthritis.

What is Dry needling ?

It is the use of acupuncture needles to treat specific localized trigger points in muscles. These consist of areas of increased muscle tension and tightness which can cause local and referred pain. When needled, these areas “relax” thereby relieving pain and allowing normal muscle activity to return. Acupuncture or dry needling are often used here at Midleton Physiotherapy Clinic in combination with Physiotherapy for improved therapeutic response. The best option for you will be discussed with you following your comprehensive assessment and examination.
